300 Sexy Abdominals

Last night we watched 300. So many sexy pectorals and abdominals. Pretty sure they didn't look like that way back in the day, but hey, I appreciate a fine specimen of the human body. And there were certainly plenty of them in this movie.

The movie had a good, simple plot...fighting for freedom and not kneeling down to false gods. It had simply amazing fight scenes...bloody, intense, and drenched in testosterone. Even the sex scene was relatively decent...and by decent, I mean that it was passionate lovemaking between a married man and woman (as opposed to adulterous sin).

While I was watching this movie, I found myself wanting to pick up a sword and a shield myself and start killing me some bad guys. After the movie, Jen and I were discussing the fact that this is the kind of movie that guys love. Why do most men love movies with fighting, violence, and war?

I believe that it's because men were created that way. Most people that know me see me as a relatively gentle, peaceful, non-physical type of guy. I have never been in a fist fight in my life. Well deep down I like to believe that I would beat down anybody who was hurting the ones that I loved. I have a real fighting side to me. It comes out when I watch movies like this. But is it really that wrong? Is it wrong to fight the bad guys? To stand up for justice and freedom? To protect my wife, and one day, my kids?

Too many men now-a-days have become lazy and sissy. Movies like this get me excited to fight for those that need to be protected, to fight against evil, and to fight for Jesus' name. I have this desire to fight deep inside of me, as a man. I don't want to ignore it. I want to use it for good, fighting against evil.

  1. Whoa mama...I need to see this movie ASAP. Haha. : )
But yeah...I know what you're saying. I actually feel like fighting and being all tough and stuff after I see movies like that, too. What does that say about me, as a woman? Maybe I'm not as aggressive as you, as a man, but I definitely have the urge to fight and attack. Haha. : )

  2. Hmmm... yeah, that's interesting that you also feel "like fighting and being all tough and stuff" after watching those types of movies, but is it the same kind of deep desire feeling? I really don't know. It's tough to know the difference between a God-created desire and a socially created desire.

  3. I think there might be something more to this than just wanting to fight. I think that it's more that most all of us have a desire to be caught up in something that is bigger than ourselves, a cause that we can be invited into and fight for. We want to be part of a grand and epic story, rather than trudging to work every day or living a life of mediocrity or insignificance.

I also think we admire people who are uncompromising in their values, who in the face of insurmountable odds stick with what their heart beats for. I think we all wish, on some level, that we could be these kinds of people. It's difficult to do that in the real world because many situations have multiple shades of gray, or because we often have conflicting desires. We cheer for King Leonidas because he refuses to compromise even unto death, and I think we all wish we could have that kind of passion and commitment to something.

  4. Interesting that you say that, Matt. The traits you stated about Leonidas sounds a lot like Jesus to me:
    - uncompromising in [his] values
    - in the face of insurmountable odds stick with what [his] heart beats for
    - refuses to compromise even unto death
    - passion and commitment

I think you're right on, Matt. We want to be a part of something bigger. And we can. Fighting alongside Jesus in this epic spiritual war.

  5. you guys are all a bunch of hypocritical neaderthals and your knowledge and commitment to real discipleship is laughable. to do or think the way you elaborate upon in the name of Jesus is incredibly blasphemous. What Bible are you reading? it is people like you that have raped the name of Jesus to such a grotesque extent that nobody in his/her right mind would want to worship the God you claim to serve.
I can only pray that somehow only the few losers who read this blog will ever see these posts: God knows what a non-believer would think if he/she ever stumbled upon this garbage. you all should be ashamed of yourselves
